Ryoute Drumming Rhythm Conventions
- Beats are regular. For any particular Ryoute rhythm the time between
drum beats is a constant. However the value of this constant may vary.
- Hands swap. If the right hand plays a beat then the left hand must
play the next beat even if it is a zero tone beat.
- Beats can have up to three tones. Loud, Quiet or Zero.
- Rhythms must be unique. An individual rhythm must not be the same
as another rhythm irrespective of where it starts and repeats. Otherwise
it is said to be the same rhythm.
- For rhythms of two tones or more there must be at least on loud tone.
- For rhythms of two tones or more there should be no consecutive loud
tones.
- For rhythms of two tones or more a basic rhythm is defined as one
with only one loud note with no more than 8 beats.
- A relational-rhythm is built from only 2 basic rhythms which must
be unique.
One-Tone Rhythms
'One-Tone' is a name given to a rhythm in Ryoute that has only one tone.
This means that every beat of the drum sounds the same as every other
beat of the drum. If the rhythm obeys convention numbers 1,2,3 then there
are only two possible rhythms that can be played.
Rhythm 1.1
Q
Rhythm 1.2
L
Q means play a Quiet tone, L means play a loud tone.
Two-Tone Rhythms
There are an infinite number of 'Two-Tone' rhythms however using convention
7 we can say that there are only 7 basic two-tone rhythms.
Rhythm 2.2

Rhythm 2.4
LQQQ
Rhythm 2.5

Rhythm 2.6

Rhythm 2.7

Rhythm 2.8

Which means that there are 21 relational two tone rhythms:
- 2.2+2.3
- 2.2+2.4
- 2.2+2.5
- 2.2+2.6
- 2.2+2.7

- 2.6+2.8
- 2.7+2.8
Three-Tone Rhythms
There are 246 basic three tone rhythms and 30135 relational three tone
rhythms, enough for a life times worth of practise. It is best to concentrate
your efforts on one-tone drumming first and then basic two-tone drumming
and then relational two-tone drumming and then start to add basic 3 tone
drumming.
3.2.1 LQ
3.2.2 LZ
3.3.1 LQQ
3.3.2 LQZ
3.3.3 LZQ
3.3.4 LZZ
3.4.1 LQQQ
3.4.2 LQQZ
3.4.3 LQZQ
3.4.4 LQZZ

3.4.7 LZZQ
3.4.8 LZZZ
3.5.1 LQQQQ
3.5.2 LQQQZ
3.5.3 LQQZQ
etc.
Conclusion
There is infinite complexity in drumming but by limiting yourself a finite
set of drumming rudiments you can quickly reach a high level of skill.
The conventions imposed above allow for one life times worth of practise
but you can obtain good results with just a couple of weeks of practise.
This allows serious drummers to use the same system as non-serious drummers.
